GreenSys will be held in Almería (Spain) from June 22 to 27 next. This event brings together scientists, researchers, technicians, and other professionals to present their scientific and technological innovations in greenhouse horticulture and other controlled-environment horticultural systems. It is an excellent opportunity to share ideas and knowledge and discuss the state-of-the-art and future perspectives for the controlled-environment horticulture sector, emphasizing sustainability issues.

The provisional program includes 44 technical sessions for oral presentations of approximately 250 papers. There will be another 150 poster presentations, for a total of 400 papers. These are presented by members of the International Society for Horticultural Science (ISHS) from research centers and universities in 35 different countries.

Special sessions are scheduled for the morning of Thursday, June 26, which will also be open to engineers and field technicians from companies in the greenhouse production sector in Almería. For this purpose, GreenSys will select ten papers that may be of interest to the production sector.

Almería has a long tradition in agriculture, starting from the Neolithic to the Bronze Age (4000-1800 B.C.) with the development of Los Millares complex, an archeological site located 20 km North West of Almeria. Today, the 32,000 ha of plastic greenhouses provide 3.7 million tons of fruits and vegetables throughout the year, allowing Almería to be Spain’s first horticultural production area with more than 100,000 jobs. Besides, the cultivation of ornamental plants has been developed over the last 15 years.

Being the area of continental Europe with the most hours of sun during the year, Almería hosts two scientific centers of international prestige. The Plataforma Solar in Tabernas is Europe’s largest solar concentrating technology research cenhttp://www2.ual.es/greensys2025.ter and the German-Spanish Astronomical Center at Cala Alto in the North of the province for space-studies.
